Anyone may report suspected child abuse and neglect. Wisconsin State Law mandates that individuals in certain professions must report if they have reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect. Mandated Reporters include:

  • Medical Personnel - Physicians, coroners, medical examiners, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, optometrists, acupuncturists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, EMT's, paramedics, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians and other medical professionals.
  • School and Child Care Personnel - Teachers, school administrators, school counselors and social workers, educational advocates/mediators, directors and staff of day care centers and nursery schools, child care workers.
  • Others - Police or law enforcement personnel, attorneys, social workers, mental health professionals, marrige and family therapists, AODA counselors, members of the treatment staff employed by or working under contract with a county department or public assistance workers including financial and employment planners.

All people who report alleged child abuse or neglect in good faith are immune from liability under criminal or civil law. Reporter identification is revealed only to law enforcement and the District Attorney.  The names of people who report abuse or neglect are not given to the person identified as the alleged maltreater unless ordered by a judge. Members of the general public may make reports without giving their names.
